Zoning Information

Zoning Permits:
In Ashland County, almost all Townships and Villages have a Zoning Resolution and Map. Therefore, in many cases, residents will be required to apply for a Zoning Permit, in order to change zoning, construct, and/or make changes to a structure. To see if you are in a Zoned Township or Incorporated Village, please check our list. (Requires a PDF Reader)

If you are located within a Zoned Township or Incorporated Village, the next step is to contact your Zoning Inspector, click here for a list of current Zoning Inspectors in Ashland County.

If you are unable to contact your Township's Zoning Inspector, please contact your Township Trustees for further advise. Click here for a list of current Township Trustees in Ashland County. Note: If you are unable to contact your Village Zoning Inspector, please contact your mayor.

Zoning Resolutions and Maps
While we do not have all Township Zoning Resolutions and Maps on file. We do have a few and for some others, we have links to their web sites. Please click here to view our most recent list.

What is needed for the County Planning Department to review?
We are providing a Checklist to follow when requesting Zoning changes, Land Use changes, or changes to Zoning Resolutions and Maps. Click here to view (PDF).

Surveying and Subdivision Application Information
Once a landowner knows if they are zoned correctly, they can proceed with a survey. Click here for a list of Registered Surveyors for Ashland County (Requires a PDF Reader).

If the property involved is a Subdivision of five (5) acres/lots or less, then it will require an Application for a Type 1 Subdivision (Requires a PDF Reader). The application may also require a Plat Review Statement from the Ashland City/County Health Department (Requires a PDF Reader).

Should the property involved require a variance, then residents will need to fill out an Application for Subdivision Variance (Requires a PDF Reader). Prior to submitting ANY subdivision applications, please have ALL required documents from your Township available.

Building Permits:
Commercial and Industrial construction projects will require a building permit. These permits are issued by the Richland County Building Regulations Office, which administers the Ohio Building Code (OBC) in unincorporated portions of Ashland County. The OBC addresses new construction, alterations, and changes in use on projects not involving new single family residential dwellings.
