The Office of the Sheriff, Ashland County, Ohio

The Detective bureau has four investigators and a secretary assigned to it. The bureau conducts follow up investigations on most criminal complaints taken by the uniform division. In 2006 the bureau worked 730 criminal cases. Our Detectives work extremely close with the other agencies in and around Ashland county. The Sheriff’s office is a participating member of the METRICH DRUG task force. Detectives from this agency work hand-in-hand with investigators from the other 10 participating counties that are members of this force.

Detective Lieutenant Ed Staley is the Director of the Detective Bureau for the Ashland County Sheriff's Office.

Detective Lt. Ed Staley began as a Special Deputy with the Sheriff's Office in 1984 working in Dispatch, Corrections and in Enforcement. He was hired full time in 1986 as a Communications Officer and in 1988 transferred to the Enforcement Division. In 1989 Ed became Ashland Counties first D.A.R.E. Officer and was very well respected and received in the Ashland City Schools as well as the county school districts.

In 1995 Ed left the D.A.R.E. program to become a Detective and was promoted to Detective Sergeant in 1999. In 2004 Sgt. Staley was placed in charge of the Detective Bureau. He was promoted to Detective Lieutenant in April of 2006. Lt. Staley has attended numerous investigative and drug related schools, including a State of Ohio Clandestine Drug Lab Training, and is Certified by the State of Ohio in Marijuana Identification. Lt. Staley is also the Chief Diver and Commander of the Ashland County Dive and Rescue Team.

Ed is an avid motorcycle rider and enthusiast, and is a member of the National H.O.G. Association. He and his wife Sue enjoy traveling around the world scuba diving, and are both scuba diving instructors. Ed also enjoys hunting and an occasional game of golf.
