The Office of the Sheriff, Ashland County, Ohio

The Office of the Sheriff in Ashland County has a uniformed Enforcement Division, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Enforcement Division is staffed by 18 dedicated professional men and women. These officers are responsible for patrolling the entire county (403 sq miles). During 2002, this division responded to 12,884 calls for service. Enforcement officers other duties include: Traffic enforcement, Traffic crash investigations, and Warrant service. Enforcement officers also provide Court security, when required.

Captain Carl L. Richert II is the head of the Enforcement Division

Capt. Richert joined the Ashland County Sheriff's Office in 1968 as a special deputy, working as a dispatcher, jailer, and undercover operations. In 1972, he was hired full-time and was assigned to road patrol. During this time, he started the Ashland County Sheriff's Office Dive & Rescue Team, which is still in operation today. In 1985, he was assigned to the detective division and worked undercover operations. Capt. Richert was promoted to the rank of Captain in charge of the Enforcement division in 1993. In 1994, he started the K-9 team, which currently has 4 K-9 units. He has been awarded the Officer of the Year in 1993 and 1998.
