The Ashland County Dog Shelter takes in stray dogs or dogs brought in by the dog warden.

The dogs are held for a set time before being claimed by the owner or vaccinated and put up for adoption.

The dog warden and staff are employed by the county commissioners and tasked with enforcing Ohio Revised Code 955, which does not include animals other than dogs. 

Please note: The Humane Society of Ashland County is a separate non-profit organization that handles animal neglect and abuse cases.

Please call to discuss your interests and dogs currently available so that we can schedule a time for you to have a meet-and-greet with possible matches.

Beginning May 1, 2023, adoption fees will increase to $175.00
Adoption Fee Includes:
Current Dog License
First Set of Shots (5 ways)
Bordetella (kennel cough) Shot
Heartworm Test
Microchip
Collar and Leash
Each dog is spayed or neutered prior to adoption. 

Licensing

Ohio State Law requires any dog over the age of three (3) months to have a license within 30 days of ownership. Any license purchased after thirty (30) days of ownership, or renewed after the annual renewal period between December 1 through January 31 must include a penalty equal to the cost of the license.
Licensing is required for all county dogs; regardless if they're an indoor or outdoor pet.
Dog licenses are available year-round at the auditor's office and dog shelter.
Kennel licenses are only available at the dog shelter.


Annual renewal period is December 1 - January 31 and licenses are  available at the following vendors:

  • Centerra Country Store - 1290 Middle Rowsburg Road, Ashland
  • Jeromesville Market - 65 High Street, Jeromesville
  • Loudonville Public Library - 122 E. Main Street, Loudonville
  • Polk Market & Deli - 401 N. Main Street, Polk
  • Sullivan Market - 246 State Route 58, Sullivan
  • Troy Road Market - 1300 Troy Road, Ashland

     

Donations and Volunteering

  • Cleaning Supplies (bleach, laundry soap, Dawn dish soap, fabric softener sheets)
  • Paper Towels
  • Soft Treats (no items containing rawhide
  • Peanut Butter
  • Purina Dog Chow Dog Food (Complete Adult with Real Chicken
  • Pet-safe Ice Melt Salt
    **We have an abundance of blankets and towels**

Monetary donations can be made out to  Ashland County Dog Shelter
Volunteers must be 18+ years old or accompanied by an adult at all times.  "No Pawz Left Behind" is currently handling the dog walking and after-hour needs.
